Instagram is working on labels for AI generated content

Instagram is reportedly developing new notifications to indicate when AI technology has been used to create content on its platform.

Alessandro Paluzzi, an app researcher known for uncovering upcoming Instagram features, has shared a screenshot of a page within the Instagram app that mentions “the creator or Meta said that this content was created or edited with AI.” The notice specifically refers to an image that has been “generated by Meta AI,” providing a brief explanation of generative AI and how to identify AI-generated posts.

This discovery follows Meta’s recent commitments, alongside major AI players like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI, to responsibly develop AI and invest in cybersecurity and discrimination research. One commitment includes the development of a watermarking system to inform users when content is AI-generated.

The extent to which Instagram’s labeling system will rely on automated processes or user disclosure regarding the use of AI remains uncertain. However, the presence of “Meta said” in the notice suggests that the tech company may proactively apply the notification in some cases, rather than relying solely on user honesty. Meta has declined to comment on the notice.

While AI-generated misinformation is still emerging, the viral spread of an image featuring the pope in a fashionable jacket highlights the potential dangers. Although this image was harmless and eventually debunked, it serves as a warning that AI tools can spread dangerous misinformation, especially when applied to satellite images or political photography.

Meta has recently made its large language model LLaMA 2 open-source, but consumer-facing generative AI features for products like Instagram are yet to be widely released. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has hinted at features such as using text prompts to modify photos for Instagram Stories, and there are indications of an “AI brush” feature that can alter specific parts of images. Meta is also reportedly planning to integrate an AI chatbot ‘personas’ feature into its products.

In addition to Meta, Google has announced its “About this image” feature, launching this summer, which will help users determine if an image has been AI-generated by highlighting its original source.
