Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy says ‘used to work at least 85 to 90 hours a week’. Internet reacts

Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy made headlines once again after reaffirming his stance on working for prolonged hours a week.

In an interview with The Economic Times, Murthy said that he used to work for 85 to 90 hours a week while he was setting up his company.

“I used to be in the office at 6:20 am and leave the office at 8:30 pm and worked six days a week. I know every nation that became prosperous did so through hard work,” he said.

“During my entire 40-plus years of professional life, I worked 70 hours a week. When we had a six-day week – till 1994 – I used to work at least 85 to 90 hours a week. That has not been a waste,” he added.

The internet, meanwhile, had a lot to say over Murthy’s fresh statement that comes after he triggered a fiery debate across the country in October earlier this year over his 70-hour remark.

“Because he was the owner. He certainly can’t expect the employees to do the same,” an X user wrote. Echoing similar thoughts, another user wrote: “Being self-employed/owner manager – and working late is different from being a salaried employee”

“A toxic work culture that shouldn’t be promoted even if you’re the founder,” another comment posted on X reads.

A section of the internet also supported his views. “Still don’t get what’s the meltdown all about. He is not holding a gun to anyone’s head, only suggesting…by the way. Most successful people work long hours. Elon Musk still works 100-110 hours a week,” an X user wrote.

In October, Narayana Murthy had said that the youth of India should be prepared to work 70 hours a week to elevate the nation’s work culture and compete effectively on the global stage. “So, my request is that our youngsters must say, ‘This is my country. I’d like to work 70 hours a week.”
