India achieved yet another milestone in its space program as it successfully launched a rocket on Friday. This rocket carried an unmanned spacecraft with the mission to land on the Moon. This marks India’s second attempt to reach such a feat, as its cost-effective space program continues to reach new heights.

The LVM3-M4 rocket, a heavyweight in India’s aerospace program, took off from Sriharikota in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Enthusiasts gathered to witness the momentous occasion, clapping and cheering as the rocket soared into the sky.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) confirmed on Twitter that the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft, which means “Mooncraft” in Sanskrit, had successfully embarked on its journey to the Moon. The health of the spacecraft was reported to be normal.

With its low-budget program, India is rapidly closing in on the achievements of established space powers like Russia, the United States, and China. Only these three nations have previously achieved a controlled landing on the lunar surface.

India’s previous attempt to land on the Moon ended in failure four years ago. However, this latest launch has ignited a sense of pride and accomplishment. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently in France for the Bastille Day parade, tweeted, “Chandrayaan-3 scripts a new chapter in India’s space odyssey. It soars high, elevating the dreams and ambitions of every Indian.”

If all goes according to plan, the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft will touch down near the Moon’s south pole between August 23 and 24. Developed by ISRO, the spacecraft includes a lander module named Vikram, meaning “valor” in Sanskrit, and a rover named Pragyan, meaning “wisdom” in Sanskrit.
