Increasing Prices for Xbox Series X and Game Pass

Microsoft is implementing a price increase for its Xbox Series X and Xbox Game Pass, starting in August. UK shoppers can expect to pay £479.99 for the flagship Xbox Series X. However, the console will maintain its current price in the US, Japan, Chile, Brazil, and Colombia. The prices for the Series X in different regions are as follows:

  • £479.99 in the UK
  • €549.99 in most European markets
  • CAD $649.99 in Canada
  • AUD 799.99 in Australia

This price adjustment is an effort to align more closely with the pricing of PlayStation’s PS5, which also experienced an increase in August 2022. However, the digital-only Xbox Series S will not be affected by this change.

In addition to the Xbox Series X price increase, Xbox Game Pass will also see a rise in cost. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will go from £10.99 to £12.99 per month, €12.99 to €12.99 in the EU, and $14.99 to $16.99 in the US. Game Pass for Console will increase from £7.99 to £8.99 in the UK, €9.99 to €10.99 in the EU, and $8.99 to $10.99 in the US. Xbox Game Pass for PC will remain unaffected.

These price adjustments will apply to new Game Pass customers starting from June 6, and existing customers will see these changes on August 13 (or September 13 in Germany).

Xbox head of communications, Kari Perez, stated, “We’ve maintained our console prices for many years and have adjusted them to reflect the competitive conditions in each market.” Microsoft has indeed held firm on Game Pass prices since its launch in 2017, making this the first increase to affect the service.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has previously acknowledged that price increases were inevitable. He said, “We’ve held price on our console, we’ve held price on games and our subscription. I don’t think we’ll be able to do that forever. I do think at some point we’ll have to raise some prices on certain things, but going into this holiday we thought it was really important that we maintain the prices that we have.”

In an unrelated gaming development, the indie survival game “Iron Lung” has experienced a surge in sales following the recent news of the missing Titanic submarine.
