In Season 2 of ‘The Bear’, This Character Deserved a Better Fate

The highly anticipated second season of The Bear is finally here, and it brings a wave of love along with it. Claire, played by Molly Gordon, enters Carmy Berzatto’s life (Jeremy Allen White) and brings about positive changes. The show, initially focused on grief in its first season, now offers a glimpse of happiness for those who persevere. However, things take a turn for the worse in the season finale when Carmy, in the midst of an anxiety attack, unintentionally utters words that could be misconstrued as a breakup.

It’s a heartbreaking moment considering the progress Carmy has made and the promising start of his relationship with Claire. Their chance encounter in the frozen food section, which was seemingly serendipitous, was actually orchestrated by the Berzatto family who hoped for their union. Despite Carmy’s improved mental health, his unresolved issues ultimately sabotage any chance at happiness.

So, what went wrong? And why is it so sad to witness Claire and Carmy’s breakup on The Bear?

Carmy is the type of character you can’t help but root for. We’ve watched him grapple with the aftermath of Mikey’s departure and how it’s brought his own demons to the surface. However, over the course of Season 2, he undergoes significant growth. The introduction of Claire becomes the highlight of his journey, and their blossoming romance presents a feel-good love story amidst the show’s darker themes.

But this is not a series that solely focuses on happily ever afters. Carmy finds himself trapped in a walk-in fridge, and during his anxious monologue, he expresses a belief that he doesn’t need amusement or enjoyment. He feels responsible for his predicament, thinking he failed his team due to his relationship. These statements stem from his struggle with depression and anxiety, but they are heartbreaking for Claire to hear on the other side of the door.

Claire, or “Claire Bear” as the Berzattos affectionately call her, has had a profound impact on Carmy’s life. She brings lightness, new experiences, and teaches him self-acceptance, which is evident in their intimate moment when she tells him to never apologize. She recognizes his dedication and respects his work, making it all the more devastating for her to hear Carmy’s hurtful words.

Admittedly, Claire’s character could have been further explored in the series. Nevertheless, from what we’ve seen, she does not deserve the criticism she receives. She appreciates Carmy’s achievements, treats him as an individual, and supports his journey. When Claire enters the picture, it initially feels like things might go awry, but as their relationship progresses, it becomes evident that Carmy needs to find balance rather than blame their connection.

Can Carmy and Claire eventually find a way to make things work? The show recognizes that developing self-respect and self-worth is a lifelong process, particularly for someone in Carmy’s headspace. Claire is patient and willing to put in the work necessary for their relationship to flourish. However, both individuals need to be on the same emotional wavelength. Although they are supported by their loved ones, Carmy’s unresolved issues prevent their relationship from fully blossoming.

As Season 3 approaches, one can only hope that Claire will return. Carmy’s harsh words were spoken from a place of despair, and he was unaware of Claire’s presence. Perhaps forgiveness is possible, as there is no obligation on Claire’s part to do so.
