In a New Documentary, Mike Flanagan Discusses Stephen King’s Most Significant Influence

Recently, several horror franchises and well-known figures have been highlighted including Kyra Elise Gardner’s documentary Living with Chucky which explores the Child’s Play franchise, and Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story focusing on Robert Englund’s remarkable career. The latest documentary titled Stephen King on Screen will examine the horror guru’s life and works. Today, GamesRadar+ exclusively revealed a clip featuring Stephen King’s frequent collaborator, Mike Flanagan. During the clip, Flanagan, who directed King-based films Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep, praised the author’s ability to create powerful female characters. Flanagan credited King’s partnership and creative synergy with his wife Tabitha King and her family as the inspiration behind his strong female characters. Throughout the clip, various scenes from different movies including It: Chapter Two, Big Driver, and Knightriders were presented. Flanagan also discussed his relationship with the author of how his wife encouraged him at critical moments in his career, including pushing him to finish his iconic novel, Carrie, which ultimately helped launch his career.

If it had not been for his wife’s support, King may have never become a celebrated author that created a legacy of horror novels, characters, and movies spanning decades. King’s captivating works like Child’s Play and Scream have resonated with audiences, as his talent lies in creating the most terrifying monsters, situations, and exploring humanity’s darker sides. The documentary Stephen King on Screen, set to release in the UK on June 26, will provide insight into King’s best works that were adapted for film. The documentary also features interviews with other King collaborators Tim Curry, James Caan, Frank Darabont, and Tom Holland, discussing their experiences of working on IT, Misery, Children of the Corn, and others.

King fans in the UK can catch the documentary on digital release from June 26, while US and Canadian audiences can expect a theatrical release later this summer. Also, another of King’s works, his short story The Boogeyman, published in 1973, will arrive on cinema screens from June 2.
