Have you ever sat down to watch a new Netflix series or movie that you’ve seen advertised, only to discover that the show you wanted to watch isn’t actually available in your country? It can be extremely frustrating and may leave you feeling like you want to change streaming services. Don’t worry though –there’s a simple solution!
All you need to do is make Netflix believe you’re in a country that does offer the movie or series you want to watch, which is easy to do by using a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
Our guide will walk you through the process, which will give you access to thousands of extra movies and series that you’d otherwise be restricted from seeing.
Why is Netflix restricted in some regions?
If you have an active Netflix subscription, you can access your account from over 190 countries across the planet. However, you are only able to access the catalog that’s permitted in that country.
Netflix does this because they are obeying licensing restrictions within each country. This means they aren’t allowed to show content that’s only licensed for specific countries, or show their entire catalog in countries that have restrictions against specific content.
The country with the largest catalog of movies and shows is actually Japan, which has over 4500 movies and more than 1300 TV series. The US – which has around 4000 movies and 1300 TV series – comes in at a very close second place. Canada also takes a top spot, after years of complaints that their options were too limited.
Compare this to other countries with more limited catalogs, such as Hong Kong, who have access to only around 400 movies and 140 series. Even the UK has approximately half of the shows and series that the US has and most countries have significantly less than that.
If you’re in one of these restricted regions, you’re either stuck with a limited number of shows, or you can use a VPN to access the content from other regions. Once you’ve set up your VPN service, accessing other catalogs is pretty easy.
How to Switch to a Different Region in Netflix: Quick Guide
- Sign up for and install a VPN that’s suitable for your needs
- Login to your Netflix account – or create a new one.
- Connect to a server in the country that has the catalog you want to view. US servers are always a good choice for accessing a large Netflix catalog.
- Go to the Netflix website or app. It should automatically redirect you to the site for whichever country’s server you’ve chosen.
- Log in to Netflix, choose your content and enjoy!
