How to get the Owlbear Cub in Baldur’s Gate 3

Search for the Owlbear Cub in Baldur’s Gate 3: For those not familiar with the lore of Faerun, few creatures in the wild instill as much fear in adventurers as the Owlbear. With its combination of owl and bear features, it possesses powerful claws that can inflict significant damage, along with the resilient nature of a bear. Fortunately, the Owlbear Cub that you can acquire as a companion at your camp is still young and less dangerous.

If you want to make sure you don’t miss anything else in your adventure, including companion missions, check out our comprehensive quest list. Additionally, if you’re curious about our thoughts on this year’s biggest PC release, be sure to read our review.

Where to Find the Owlbear Cub in Baldur’s Gate 3

The Owlbear Cub can be found in a cave to the west of the Druid Grove and slightly northeast of the Blighted Village. It is located in a small ravine with a shallow river running through it. Your companions will notice Owlbear tracks leading into the cave if you pass a skill check. This cave is known as the Owlbear Nest.

Inside the cave, you will discover a Gilded Chest next to a statue of Selune. Beyond that, you will encounter the Owlbear mother and her cub. To open the chest, you will need to use a prayer sheet.

How to Recruit the Owlbear Cub in Baldur’s Gate 3

You cannot recruit the Owlbear Cub in the Owlbear Nest. First, you must defeat the mother. Alternatively, you can interact with the mother and pass an animal handling, survival, or performance check to prevent her from attacking you. This will buy you enough time to prepare for the fight or leave the cave altogether. If you leave the mother alive, you can still find the Owlbear Cub later. It is crucial that you do not attack or kill the Owlbear Cub, even if it attacks you.

To make the fight against the Owlbear easier, climb to the second level of the cave for better chances in your attack rolls. We utilized Laezel’s Menacing Attack to frighten the Owlbear, making it stay in one place while we showered it with arrows and magic. Once the mother is slain, leave the cub alive, and it will gruesomely start feasting on its dead mother. There are also valuable items in the cave, such as the Oakfather’s Embrace armor on a corpse.

Leave the cub in the nest and head to the Goblin Camp located to the west of the Blighted Village after taking at least one long rest. You must peacefully enter the Goblin camp, either by using your Illithid tadpole to convince the Goblins that you are a True Soul or through other means, such as being a Drow, a race they see as an ally.

Once you cross the bridge into the main camp, you will encounter several goblins surrounding the helpless Owlbear Cub. If the Owlbear Cub is not present, take another long rest. Engage in conversation with Krolla, who will inform you about a new game called Chicken Chase. However, she will only allow you to play if the nearby Bard Volo is silenced. You must speak with Volo, disrupting his performance and making him return to his prison.

Agree to play the Chicken Chase game with Krolla, provide her with the required gold payment, and follow the Owlbear Cub through the obstacle course. The objective of Chicken Chase is to guide the Owlbear Cub towards the goalposts at the back. During this game, directly communicate with the Owlbear Cub and, using your animal handling proficiency, direct it towards the goalposts. If you have the ability to Speak with Animals, whether through a spell or potion, you can also persuade the Owlbear Cub to head towards the goalposts. Congratulations, you have successfully completed Chicken Chase.

Krolla may attempt to cheat you out of your gold winnings. However, you can use the Illithid tadpole’s mind control to convince her to hand over her winnings and more. Return to the location where you initially met Krolla and inform her that you will be taking the Owlbear Cub with you. Now, she will not dare argue with you.

Your hero will express hope that the Owlbear Cub can safely make it back to your camp. The Owlbear Cub will not immediately appear in your camp. You must take several long rests before it shows up, nervous and hungry. Feed the Owlbear Cub, and it will continue to return in the future, forming a stronger bond with you and your companions.

And that concludes all the information you need to acquire your very own Owlbear Cub as a pet. If you are having trouble defeating the Owlbear mother, consult our guides on the best build for each class, such as Fighter or Wizard. Additionally, familiarizing yourself with ritual spells, including those that allow you to speak with animals, will help you avoid combat with such formidable creatures.
