Here’s why Google Wallet doesn’t work on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 cover screen

There has been some controversy surrounding the use of Google Wallet on Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z Flip 5, particularly on its cover screen. Initially, it appeared that Samsung was deliberately blocking the feature, but now it has become clear why Google Wallet is not functioning properly. Interestingly, the function does work, but in an unconventional way.

9to5Google decided to investigate this issue after discovering that Google Wallet does not work on the Z Flip 5’s ‘Flex Window’ – the name given to the phone’s cover screen by Samsung. Considering that Samsung Wallet functions perfectly fine on the outer display and Google Wallet works seamlessly on other cover screens (such as Motorola’s Razr+), there seems to be no functional reason why Google Wallet wouldn’t work. This led some to suspect that Samsung intentionally blocked the feature.

In a peculiar turn of events, users were able to enable Google Wallet on the Flex Window, but when tapped, would result in a pop-up asking users to open the phone to continue. This prevents users from accessing Google Wallet from the cover display, which is far more convenient than having to unfold the phone each time a purchase is made.

However, 9to5 reported that the issue lies in how Samsung implemented apps on the Flex Window. To use an app on the cover screen, users need to utilize Samsung’s ‘Good Lock’ and manually enable the app from a list. This list of apps is the same as the ones found in the app drawer. However, Google Wallet is not technically an app. Instead, what users see in the app drawer is merely a shortcut to the Wallet functions, powered by Google Play Services. (Google frequently follows this approach with other apps, such as Google Podcasts, which serves as a shortcut to the functionality within the Google app.)

Due to this, users are unable to enable Google Wallet since Play Services does not appear in the app drawer. Consequently, it cannot be enabled to work on the Flex Window through Samsung’s Good Lock. Additionally, even if the Google Wallet shortcut is enabled, attempting to open the Wallet on the cover screen results in no response.

In addition, 9to5’s senior editor Ben Schoon states that Google Wallet can still be used for payments in its current state, but there is no user interface to indicate that it is functioning.

Hopefully, Samsung will release an update to address this issue. However, given that Samsung Wallet and Google Wallet are competing products, there may be some doubt. Nevertheless, now that the root cause of the problem has been identified, it is likely that a workaround will be discovered in the near future.
