In May of 2019, Huawei was placed on the Entity List by the U.S., which prevented the company from accessing its U.S. supply chain, including Google. This move was especially consequential for Huawei as it could no longer use the Google Mobile Services (GMS) version of Android, which it had previously relied on. As a result, Huawei was forced to develop HarmonyOS, which was first introduced in August 2019. The operating system has been installed on the first of this year’s two Huawei flagship lines, the P60 series, and Huawei has announced that HarmonyOS 4.0 is coming.
According to Huawei Central, HarmonyOS 4.0 will be released starting on August 4th during the Huawei Developers Conference. The new iteration of the software is expected to offer enhanced AI capabilities and an improved cross-device experience between smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, smart televisions, and more. HarmonyOS 4.0 is also said to provide significant improvements to smart car functionality.
Huawei’s App Galaxy, which was launched in China in 2011, is now found on all of the company’s new handsets along with Huawei Mobile Services. Meanwhile, Honor, a former sub-unit of Huawei, was sold to a conglomerate for around $15 billion to avoid facing the same bans as Huawei. As a result, Honor is no longer associated with Huawei and is allowed to use the Google Mobile Services version of Android along with the Play Store.
It’s clear that Huawei’s push to develop its own operating system has allowed the company to remain competitive despite the challenges it faces. With the upcoming release of HarmonyOS 4.0, Huawei is poised to continue disrupting the tech industry and expanding its presence in the global market.
