Gujarat Engages in Discussions with Foxconn for Semiconductor Plant Following the Cancellation of Vedanta JV

Gujarat, a state in India, is currently engaged in discussions with Foxconn regarding the establishment of a semiconductor plant. This update comes shortly after the Taiwanese corporation terminated its joint-venture arrangement with Vedanta in India. Vijay Nehra, the secretary of the science and technology department in Gujarat, expressed optimism about attracting prominent chipmakers to the region by stating, “Gujarat is uniquely positioned to attract top chipmakers.”

Foxconn recently pulled out of its project with Vedanta, which was planned for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat. The cessation was attributed to issues relating to slow progress. This development dealt a blow to Modi’s ambitious goal of establishing India as a hub for semiconductor manufacturing. However, Foxconn later announced its intention to independently apply for chip incentives in India and explore new partnerships.

Despite requests for comment, Foxconn has not yet responded. Reuters is the first to report on the ongoing talks between Foxconn and Gujarat.

Chipmaking is a key priority for Modi as he strives to usher in a “new era” in electronics manufacturing. However, his plan has encountered obstacles thus far. While three companies – Vedanta-Foxconn JV, IGSS Ventures based in Singapore, and the global consortium ISMC, which has Tower Semiconductor as a tech partner – applied for incentives last year, no deals have been finalized.

In regards to the split with Vedanta, Foxconn explained on Tuesday that both parties recognized the project’s lack of sufficient progress and the existence of challenging obstacles that hindered smooth advancement. However, no further details were provided.

Foxconn’s representative in India, V. Lee, shared on LinkedIn, “Sometimes, you will fly higher when in solo.”

The discussions between Foxconn and Gujarat come shortly after Micron Technology announced its plans to invest up to $825 million (approximately Rs. 6,800 crore) in a semiconductor testing and packaging facility in the state.
