McDonald’s has surprised everyone by releasing a Game Boy Color game in honor of Grimace’s 52nd birthday. Developed by Krool Toys, Grimace’s Birthday can be played in a browser on desktop/smartphone, or on a Game Boy Color through a ROM file. The game is designed to promote McDonald’s new Grimace Birthday milkshake.
Kudos to Krool Toys for designing a classic Game Boy Color title with 8-bit sound, pixelated visuals, and floaty controls. Grimace’s Birthday depicts the purple monster throwing a birthday party for himself at a McDonald’s restaurant with none of his friends showing up, including McDonald’s’ greatest creation, the Hamburglar. The game’s objective is for Grimace to round up his posse before midnight.
The first two levels focus on Grimace skateboarding around while collecting purple shakes, complete with various tricks. The later half of the game features the purple mascot running around while still gathering up milkshakes. Burger King’s promotional Xbox 360 title Sneak King inspires the entire Grimace’s Birthday promotional campaign, also featuring the fast food chain’s somewhat creepy-looking King mascot that surprised people with unwarranted burger deliveries.
However, unlike Burger King’s games, Grimace’s Birthday is an excellent promotional strategy and a trip down millennials’ nostalgia lane. While McDonald’s has not revealed the reason behind releasing this game, one thing is for sure that McDonald’s has found a creative way to promote its new product and make people feel nostalgic.
On a side note, someone has created beautiful box art for Grimace’s Birthday, which is truly impressive. If McDonald’s continues this fantastic promotional strategy, it is safe to say that they will never miss a mark on their audience.
