Government has a warning for online shoppers

If you come across an online advertisement or an online website that offers products at an overly high discount, then this could be a trap set by scammers to steal your money. CyberDost- safety and cybersecurity awareness Twitter handle maintained by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, is warning online shoppers to not fall for such websites.
In a post shared on microblogging site Twitter, Cyber Dost is asking citizens to beware of such websites giving absurdly high discounts on goods. It further asks users to avoid any financial transactions on these websites. This is because entering any personal or banking details on these fraudulent websites may result in identity theft or loss of money.
“Be cyber safe in festive season: Beware of e-commerce websites and advertisements selling items at highly discounted prices. If website seems doubtful, avoid any transaction,” reads the post by the official Twitter handle of Cyber Dost.

Earlier this month, the cyber safety handle shared four tips for social media users that can help them secure their accounts and avoid online frauds. It requested citizens to check their social media account settings like security, visibility and privacy periodically. Before accepting a friend request on social media, one must verify the credentials. Also, one should be vigilant while posting personal pictures/activities ‘publically’, as they could be misused. Lastly, a user should use two-factor authentication for accessing their social media account. Securing the account through OTP on mobile or email can help avoid unauthorised access.
