Google’s Nearby Sharing is out now in Beta Testing

For a long time, Google has been working on creating an AirDrop like file-sharing feature called Nearby Sharing. Well, the good news is, Nearby Sharing is now out in beta. As of now, this beta is only available for a select few users who are registered with the Google Play Services Beta testing program.

Android Police first noted that Nearby Sharing is out now in beta testing. It has also shared some screenshots of the app showing how it actually looks and works.

“We’re currently conducting a beta test of a new Nearby Share feature that we plan to share more information on in the future. Our goal is to launch the feature with support for Android 6+ devices as well as other platforms,” a Google spokesperson was quoted as saying by AndroidPolice.

Once set up, the Nearby Share option will show you nearby devices, you can select the visibility levels to your contacts, or you can turn the feature off altogether. Once connected, you will be able to share images, links, videos, documents, and other content. However, unlike AirDrop, the recipient will also have to accept before someone can wirelessly transfer content to their phone via Nearby Sharing.

When you open the app for the first time, you need to configure settings such as device name, visibility status, and the connectivity medium over which you want to initiate the transfer. There will also be three visibility options – All Contacts, Some Contacts, and Hidden.

As of now, it is still unclear when Nearby Sharing will be available for everyone to use. However, we can expect to see this feature to bundled up with the stable release of Android 11 which is scheduled to hit later this year.
