Google TV adds features for kids, here’s what’s new

Google has started rolling out some new features for Google TV customers that are related to the kids profiles on the platform. This new update is expected to reach all users over the upcoming weeks and will include multiple new features including — home screen recommendations, parent-managed watchlists, a redesigned Family Link app and supervised usage of the main YouTube app. The kids profile was introduced on the Google TV platform in 2021 and aim to offer young viewers a separate portal that is designed to show only age-appropriate content.
Google TV kids profile: New features
Managed watchlists will allow parents to add movies and TV shows to a watchlist that will appear on the home screen of the kids profile on Google TV. The process to add content to a kids profile is also very easy. Parents have to select a movie or TV show and press the watchlist button. Then, they have to choose the kid’s profile to add the content to it. This will help the young viewers to move from one video to the next (according to their parent’s selections).

Unlike the adult accounts, the home screen of the kids profiles on Google TV used to display various kid-friendly streaming apps. With this new change, Google TV will also offer recommendations for specific content directly on the home screen of the kids profiles. Google explains that these recommendations are “based on the apps you’ve added and the rating settings you’ve set.” The company also claims that hiding anything that you don’t want to appear on the home screen will become easier with this change.
Google TV will now also support a supervised experience of YouTube which will help older kids to move safely from the YouTube Kids app. This new experience will allow parents to adjust the features that their children can use. It will also allow them to block channels and manage additional controls through the YouTube mobile app.

Apart from these new kid-related features, Google has also introduced a redesigned Family Link app. The new version of the app will help users quickly find the most used tools and features. This version also has a Highlights tab that “shows a snapshot of your child’s app usage, screen time and recently installed apps.”
