Google has rebranded its Hangouts Meet to simply Google Meet. As noticed by Android Police, the search giant has renamed Hangouts Meet as Google Meet on the web and confirmed the old name will be retired.
This rebrand was made yesterday in a Google Cloud blog post where Hangouts Meet has been updated with this name. On further checking all the support pages of Google, the tech giant has rebranded the name of Hangouts Meet everywhere confirming the old name has been retired.
For G Suite users, Google plans to commence the transition from the classic Hangouts to the newer platforms in June 2020. For free users too, the transition is expected to begin in 2020 itself but the exact timelines are yet to be shared.
Well, it looks like the rebranding is still in progress. As of now, the service is still called Hangouts Meet by Google in the iOS App Store, and its G Suite landing page also retains the old name. Also, there are few landing pages where the service is still referred to as Hangouts Meet.
This rebranding comes at the time when more people are joining the platform during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. According to Google, Meet’s usage has been increased by over 25 times as it was earlier. Last month, Google mentioned that the service is gaining more than 2 million new users a day. And so, rebranding might revive more users in the name of Google.
