Google at I/O Conference 2019 announced that they will soon be shipping the support for wide color photos to Android. And thereafter, it was rumored that Google Pixel 3 may support the P3 wide-color gamut, but unfortunately, it didn’t happen as expected. But now, a new report suggests that the upcoming Pixel 4 camera might get this P3 wide color gamut capture support.
As of now, all Android smartphones capture and display images in the older sRGB color space, the reason behind this is Android doesn’t support the P3 color gamut yet. Even, the camera, as well as the display of all the modern Android smartphones, are capable to support P3-colour gamut. But due to the complexity of inducting the code in the system, this hasn’t been done on Android phones.
However, this will most likely change with the introduction of the Google Pixel 4. Code found in the Google Camera app by a senior XDA Developers member enables P3 wide color gamut photo capture. The photos captured with the P3 color gamut have colors that are outside the sRGB range. There isn’t a lot of difference between the images captured using sRGB and P3, but colors do seem to appear truer to life. If a scene contains a lot of colors, then the difference would be more apparent.
As of now, this feature is only available to iPhones. are the only smartphones that capture and display images in P3 color gamut. Images captured using this profile show about 25 percent more colors. With the introduction of this support on Google Pixel 4, this will be the first Android smartphone to have this feature.
As for the availability of this feature on other Android smartphones, we can expect to have this feature rolling out to most of the Android smartphones out there in the market. However, this process will take some time to get on hans to everyone.
