Google has announced to shut down its app Neighbourly

Neighbourly was another experimental app by Google which was launched less than two years back in May 2018 and is now came to its end. It is an India focused Q&A app that Google had launched in Mumbai.

It was developed by the company’s Next Billion Initiative and was aimed to give the local communities to learn and explore more about their neighborhood by asking other residents and local experts in Mumbai. It was then expanded to other Indian cities with additional new features. It supported voice-based entry for questions with a wide range of local languages.

The app gained popularity after its launch initially and, as stated by Google, a million questions were answered as well. Then things didn’t go well later and the initial buzz died soon. It failed to gain traction and it never came out of beta. There weren’t enough users for them to deliver an engaging experience and it never grew as expected.

Google has announced that it will shut down the app on May 12 this year and hence it would no longer be available across all platforms. But the content could be downloaded from Neighbourly app until October 12, 2020.

The focus will be upon other apps and services that are serving people already such as Google Maps, which is quite a popular and accepted app for the same.

Neighbourly joins the Google Graveyard along with many unsuccessful lists of apps such as Google+, Allo, Wave and so on to name a few.
