Google Announced App Defense Alliance to Stop Malicious Apps From Entering into Play Store

Google has made an announcement on Wednesday stating that it is getting a new layer of protection for play store I the form of App Defense Alliance. The main intention behind this app defense alliance is to fight the malicious applications that are present in the Google play store. In this app alliance Google is collaborating with three companies- ESET, Zimperium, and Lookout. This alliance is going to scan all the apps present in the play store and remove any kind of threat that they are posing for the users.

The app defense alliance will be using a scanner that Google is integrating along with Google Play Protect Services. Play protect services usually use machine learning along with heuristic analysis to detect any kind of abusive behavior. Now adding another extra layer of scanning technique will make this entire process much more secured. The app defense alliance will be sending the scanned results to Google Play Protect while Play Protect will send the analysis to partners. This way the details regarding an app will be exchanged between both the parties. Many apps are in queue to get published in the Google Play Store and the alliance will check how reliable these apps are before publishing them.

Google released a blog post regarding the same stating that the Android market is expanding like never before and more than 2.5 billion people are using it. This has made Android a sweet target for the abusers and hence Google is working with the industry experts in a quest to differentiate malicious apps from the good ones. The one thing that Google wants is to make the Google Play Store is a safer option for all the users out there.

There are so many instances where Google removed a particular app even though it has some millions of downloads just because it was malicious. According to Threatpost, Play Store has removed 172 malicious apps that have more than 335 million downloads in September and in October it removed 42 apps with 8 million malicious downloads. The app defense alliance is indeed a good thing as there are so many security threats in the Play Store already.
