Although we weren’t anticipating the Mac Studio to be announced at WWDC 2023 until the last minute, given that its predecessor only launched in 2022, it’s now here, much to the delight of creative professionals who can afford it. Sadly, the long-awaited iMac 2023 did not make an appearance, leaving mainstream customers disappointed. Instead, Apple released a new version of its compact workstation, the Mac Studio M2 (2023), promising significant performance improvements and enhanced connectivity while retaining the same appearance as its predecessor. Here are five things you should know about Apple’s updated desktop computer:
1. The Mac Studio M2 (2023) is now powered by Apple’s M2 Max and M2 Ultra SoCs, which means it’s much more capable than its M1-powered predecessor. The M2 Max model features a 12-core CPU, up to a 38-core GPU, and up to 96GB of unified memory, while the M2 Ultra model features a 24-core CPU, up to a 76-core GPU, and up to 192GB of memory.
2. The new Mac Studio can support up to 8K resolution and 240Hz frame rates, along with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity.
3. It has the same chassis as the previous generation Mac Studio, which comes with the same ports. Unfortunately, Apple did not update the chassis design, which may disappoint those who were not fans of the plain boxy look.
4. Despite the upgrades, the Mac Studio M2 (2023) starts at the same price as its predecessor, at $1,999 in the US and £2,099 in the UK, with additional configurations available.
5. The Mac Studio M2 (2023) is designed for creative professionals who require a lot of power for their graphically-intensive and processor-heavy tasks. It may not be cost-effective for those who do not engage in heavy graphic design or video editing workloads.
