The voice actors for Paimon and Kazuha’s companion, popularly known as Tomo, in the anime game Genshin Impact, have expressed their dissatisfaction with the alleged non-payment for their work. Despite the game’s massive profits, both voice actors claim that they haven’t received any payment for months.
Brandon Winckler, who voices Kazuha’s friend and various minor characters, took to Twitter to share their frustrations. In a detailed thread, they stated that it is unacceptable for actors to wait for more than four months for payment, especially when the game generates around $86 million per month.
Winckler also revealed that this issue is not uncommon, sharing their personal experience of waiting for payment ranging from four to eight months. They emphasized the financial difficulties faced by actors who struggle to make ends meet while working on non-union productions. They concluded the thread by stating their decision to no longer work on the game unless it becomes unionized.
Corina Boettger, the voice actress for Paimon, also expressed support for unions. Boettger, who has the most lines in the game, tweeted about working for months without pay on a significant project, struggling to pay rent as a result. They argued that a project of this magnitude, which has generated billions of dollars, should be unionized.
Both Winckler and Boettger later clarified that the Formosa Interactive studio, not HoYoverse, is likely responsible for the payment issues.
In response to the situation, HoYoverse issued a statement to Sports Illustrated, confirming that they have made timely payments to the recording studio. They expressed regret over the ongoing situation and assured their support to the voice actors in claiming their rightful compensation. HoYoverse also stated that they have urged the studio to pay the voice actors and are exploring alternative solutions to resolve the matter.
With the highly anticipated Genshin Impact version 4.0 update approaching, it is hoped that the payment issue will be resolved promptly.
