World of Warcraft has officially confirmed that Trader’s Tender will not be sold as a standalone product, according to WoW game director Ion Hazzikostas.
Previously, fansite Wowhead datamined several icons representing different amounts of Trader’s Tender, a unique currency used to purchase rotating cosmetics through the game’s Trading Post. The discovery of these icons sparked concerns among fans that Blizzard may be turning the Trading Post into a microtransaction store, with Trader’s Tender as a premium currency available for purchase with real money. This worried players who primarily earn Trader’s Tender through in-game activities.
In a recent interview with GameSpot, Hazzikostas clarified the confusion surrounding the datamined icons. He stated definitively that there are no plans to sell Trader’s Tender as a standalone product. However, he acknowledged that it does make sense to include Trader’s Tender in various bundles, such as expansion deluxe editions. For example, players who purchased WoW’s latest Dragonflight expansion received a one-time reward of 500 Trader’s Tender. Blizzard may explore similar rewards in the future.
Hazzikostas also mentioned the possibility of significant bundles later in the year that may include Trader’s Tender as part of the package. This approach gives players more choice and agency in selecting items they like, compared to previous deluxe editions that offered specific pets, which may not appeal to all players.
Regarding the specific amounts of Trader’s Tender discovered in the datamine, Hazzikostas explained that the team creates a variety of assets as a precautionary measure for potential future use in bundles or promotions. These assets are usually encrypted and not meant to be visible unless there is a plan to use them. However, due to an error, they became visible in the game’s public test realm.
Hazzikostas emphasized that the team has no intentions of changing how the Trading Post functions. They have heard the negative feedback from the community regarding the idea of purchasing Trader’s Tender and want to reassure players that the majority of Trader’s Tender will continue to be earned through in-game activities.
The next major update for WoW, Fractures in Time, will be released on July 11. This update introduces a new support-style DPS specialization, along with new story content and a mega-dungeon featuring WoW’s largest dragon, Galakrond.
