Gal Gadot, the star of the upcoming film Cleopatra, aims to bring a fresh perspective to the real Egyptian queen. In an interview with Vogue, she expressed her passion for portraying Cleopatra’s true story and challenging the old Hollywood portrayal of her as a mere seductress.
Gadot stated, “I’m determined to do justice to this character, celebrate her legacy, and change the narrative surrounding her. We have an exquisite script, and I’m excited to share this remarkable story with the world.”
Cleopatra is famously known for Elizabeth Taylor’s portrayal in the 1963 film, opposite Richard Burton. Gadot noted that previous interpretations solely focused on Cleopatra’s seductive nature and her affairs with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, but the truth is that she was a visionary ahead of her time.
Gadot signed onto the Cleopatra movie in 2020 under the direction of Patty Jenkins, who later withdrew from the project. Gadot explained, “Cleopatra is a genuine female leader, unlike Wonder Woman who is a fictional character. That’s precisely the kind of story I wanted to tell after delving into books about Cleopatra.”
Gadot, having grown up in Israel near the Egyptian border, aims to shine a spotlight on Cleopatra’s accomplishments as a leader. Despite facing criticism for her casting, with accusations of whitewashing, Gadot defended her position by pointing out that Cleopatra was actually Macedonian.
