Streaming movies for free may seem tempting, but a new study by NordVPN highlights the risks involved. Cyber criminals are exploiting popular films like Barbie, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Oppenheimer to distribute malware and malicious software onto devices.
This malware can be used by hackers to steal personal data, monitor online activity, and even delete files. Certain films are more prone to attracting cyber thieves than others.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 tops the list for malware concerns when attempting to illegally stream it. The Super Mario Bros. Movie follows closely, with Barbie and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny being additional targets.
NordVPN reveals that social media platforms, particularly Twitter, present the highest risk of contracting a virus through malicious links. Unlike search engines such as Google Chrome, which filter out copyright infringements, Twitter is flooded with these harmful links.
“Malicious links are more commonly found on Twitter than search engines like Google Chrome, which filter out most search results that are obviously copyright infringements,” explained Nord VPN.
Spyware, worms, trojans, adware, scareware, ransomware, and fireless malware are among the most prevalent types of malware found in movie streams.
While the lure of watching a film before its official release is enticing, it is not without risks. Therefore, caution is advised.
Adrianus Warmenhoven, a cybersecurity advisor at NordVPN, warned film enthusiasts about the dangers associated with searching for movies online. He stated, “Films like Barbie and Oppenheimer have recently gained immense popularity, and it is not surprising that fans are eager to enjoy summer blockbusters from the comfort of their homes. However, fans need to be cautious as many of these online links contain phishing and malware software that can lead to undesirable consequences.
“In addition, it is like searching for a needle in a haystack to find a watchable movie through these methods. Most of these blockbusters will be available soon on legitimate streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video. We encourage film enthusiasts to be patient and enjoy these movies securely.
“Remember to exercise caution when clicking on any link, even on a trusted website, and utilize anti-malware tools such as Threat Protection.”
