The Anime Expo 2023 commenced with great enthusiasm on Saturday, captivating fans who eagerly awaited news about the most significant upcoming anime projects. Studio Trigger’s highly anticipated panel not only provided attendees with a premiere episode of their latest project but also revealed the revival of two beloved properties.
Undoubtedly, the highlight of the event was the teaser for the long-awaited return of the popular Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt (watch the teaser here). This anime series follows two fallen angels wreaking havoc as they strive to redeem themselves and ascend to heaven. Noted for its distinctive visual style inspired by American cartoons and its irreverent humor, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt’s inclusion in IGN’s list of the best anime of the 2010s celebrated it as an “entertaining joy-ride with numerous tributes to western cartoons and an incredible soundtrack.”
After teasing the revival at last year’s Anime Expo, more details about the project were unveiled, generating much excitement among fans. Director Hiroyuki Imaishi is set to return alongside animation director Sushio, writer Hiromi Wakabayashi, and designer Shigeto Koyama, although the final title of the revival is yet to be confirmed.
During the panel, Studio Trigger President Masahiko Otsuka revealed that the desire to create a new Panty & Stocking project had long been cherished by the studio. However, due to rights issues with studio Gainax, their plans were previously hindered. Fortunately, Trigger has now regained full control of the property, allowing them the freedom to produce as many new Panty & Stocking projects as they desire. Otsuka even jokingly hinted at the possibility of ten seasons and a movie, playfully taking a swipe at the television series “Community.” Currently, no information about the format or release date of the revival has been disclosed.
In addition to the Panty & Stocking revival, Imaishi and Otsuka delighted the audience by sharing a new trailer for the theatrical re-release of the two-part Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann film, which coincides with its 15th anniversary. These films will be available in North America this winter, and moviegoers will have the opportunity to experience them in 4D.
Among the new projects unveiled at Anime Expo, one that stood out was the highly anticipated advance premiere of the first episode of Delicious in Dungeon. Adapted from Ryōko Kui’s comedy adventure manga, the anime follows a Dungeons & Dragons party as they navigate a treacherous dungeon while indulging in consuming everything they encounter. This anime will premiere on Netflix in January 2024, much to the excitement of fans.
