Director Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida has consistently demonstrated his dedication to the fans, creating a game that boasts one of the most active development teams. Following his recent appearance at the FFXIV Fan Festival 2023, Yoshi-P has provided insights into the game’s upcoming expansion and his personal vision for playable content in this beloved MMO.

During a roundtable interview that followed the keynote presentation and Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail reveal at this year’s Fan Fest, Yoshi-P revealed an intriguing plan. The developers had contemplated integrating playable mini-game versions of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection into FFXIV. This idea was sparked following the release of the collection. Yoshi-P pondered, “Wouldn’t it be cool if we can play that in the Gold Saucer?”

Unfortunately, the developers faced challenges when attempting to successfully implement these mini-games. Yoshi-P explained that the primary obstacle was the fact that the new Remaster collection was considered “middleware.” Consequently, building an additional system capable of playing back the middleware within the game proved problematic. Essentially, it would require constructing a system of a game to play a system of a game.

Yoshi-P humorously referred to this challenge as a “weird configuration.” However, the good news for fans of the Pixel Remaster is that the idea has not been completely discarded. In an interview, Yoshi-P playfully invited a “super programmer” up for the task to submit an application to Square Enix, suggesting that they would be delighted to receive them.

Considering Yoshi-P’s recent analogy about a Final Fantasy XIV TV show, there is reason to remain optimistic about any potential possibilities, no matter how whimsical they may seem.
