Sony’s Spider-Man franchise is expanding with the upcoming release of El Muerto, which is set to begin filming on August 7 in Los Angeles, California, according to Production List. The movie follows the story of the titular character, who gains superpowers after donning a mystical mask. While it remains uncertain whether Spider-Man will make an appearance, the film is expected to stand alone. With lead actor Bad Bunny set to star, Jonás Cuarón is directing with a script written by Gareth Dunnet Alcocer. As Sony’s Spider-Man universe expands, we can expect more casting announcements in the near future.
Sony has enjoyed great success with its Spider-Man films, with Venom being a notable example of sustained box-office success. El Muerto could be another hit, although it could also be an underwhelming outing like Morbius. Regardless of the outcome of El Muerto, Sony remains committed to expanding its cinematic universe with more Spider-Man spin-offs in the pipeline, including Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, and another Venom film set to release in 2024 alongside Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
