Fast food apps like McDonald’s and Taco Bell were impacted by Amazon’s server outage.

A recent outage in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud server setup had a significant impact on a number of internet services, including our own website. However, we are pleased to report that the issue has now been resolved.

According to the AWS Health Dashboard, degradation of multiple services in the US-East-1 region was noted around 3PM ET, and this was subsequently investigated by AWS engineering teams. The root cause was identified as an issue with a subsystem responsible for capacity management for AWS Lambda. By 3:37 PM PDT, the backlog was fully processed, and all AWS services were operating normally.

Unfortunately, this outage had negative consequences, impacting Burger King, McDonald’s, and Delta Air Lines, among others. The Taco Bell app was also down, as Mitchell Clark of our team discovered while hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. IT workers on Reddit and Hacker News reported console access issues during this time.

At The Verge, we experienced difficulties with the front page of our site not updating automatically, but we found a workaround. This event emphasizes the importance of having a contingency plan in place in the event of system failures, particularly when they involve large cloud providers such as AWS.

In summary, the AWS outage was a serious issue, but thanks to the hard work of their engineering teams, services have now been restored. We remain vigilant and fully committed to ensuring our website remains fully operational at all times.

Update: As of June 13th, the issue has been resolved, with the latest update from AWS indicating that services are operating normally.
