Hackers deface Facebook’s official Twitter and Instagram accounts compromised and then defaced by a group of hackers known as OurMine. This is the same group of hackers who have hacked numerous official accounts in the past. Recently, OurMine hacked the accounts of 15 NFL football teams and has previously taken over Mark Zuckerberg’s Pinterest and Twitter accounts.
This time, they targetted Facebook’s official accounts on Twitter and Instagram. During this course of action, they hijacked the following accounts:
- Facebook’s Twitter account [source]
- Facebook’s Instagram account [source]
- Facebook Messenger’s Twitter account [source]
- Facebook Messenger’s Instagram account [source]
All these accounts have been recovered within minutes and all the defaced posts were removed. However, many users on Twitter and Instagram took screenshots of the posts published via the accounts.
As mentioned above, last week, this hacker group compromised the Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook accounts for the NFL, 15 NFL teams, and sports TV station ESPN. The hacks took place before the Super Bowl, in order to gain the group reputational points and media coverage. These unauthorized tweets posted on the Twitter timelines of NFL and its teams were posted via an app named Khoros, an app that’s usually used by digital marketing and public relations departments.
This time, the defaced posts were shared by the same Khoros app on Facebook’s official accounts. You can see one of the screenshots taken by a user.

Twitter provided public comment regarding the hack, saying that it “locked the compromised accounts and are working closely with our partners at Facebook to restore them” when it noticed the matter.
