World’s favorite online social networking app Facebook will soon add a feature that will let your friends know about your availability and whereabouts. This is the prototype version of Instagram’s Threads app Auto Status option where via emojis, over their profile icon, what a person is up to is indicated. This feature on the messenger will allow the user to share their basic location information and activity without specifying the place or address. It also allows you to choose specific people who can see your status.
The feature on Facebook Messenger will use your accelerometer, location, and battery life to find out what you are up to and then share the same with your specific friends, as per a report. However, it will overlay an emoji on your profile icon to describe your activity status rather than sharing the exact coordinates.
Alexandru Voica, Facebook’s EMEA Communications Manager, confirmed the development of the feature and also said that it was in its early stage and not externally testing while responding to a tweet regarding the same.
We're always exploring new features to improve your Messenger experience. This feature is still in early development and not externally testing. https://t.co/SAYE9BcFC7

While Down To Lunch and Free couldn’t make a mark and went, Snapchat’s Snap Map and it’s acquisition Zenly both doubled down on precise location sharing.
Facebook has been experimenting on this feature since early 2018 when it’s manual Emoji status arrived. Then in October, it introduced Auto Status but only in Instagram side-app Threads.
