Facebook Maps Pairs with AI Tool for OpenStreetMap Project

Facebook has introduced its own Artificial Intelligence Tool for the OpenStreetMap Project. The Social Network giant will soon launch its new Map service powered by the advanced Artificial Intelligence. This will be an open-source mapping data source where local people can also add the data of their locations etc.

There are many less map covered countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, Bangladesh and millions of miles of roads are unmapped. The world is full of roads and there are only a few groups who are currently working on the development of the maps for the remaining countries.

Google and Apple have their Maps which are focused on Businesses and Local services. We can get data from any local service within the app. Google is constantly upgrading its Google Maps app by adding a handful of new features and updates regularly. And now, Facebook too is coming up with its new Maps service powered by AI tool.

Facebook wants enthusiastic people to take part in this new venture allowing users to make use of its modern services. If we talk about Facebook’s new venture, the giant has covered more than 300,000 miles of roads in Thailand. They are contributing the data of these roads with its OpenStreetMap project.

The Map will be equipped with an advanced Machine Learning labelling tool called RapiD. This tool accelerates the process of computer-readable data directly from the satellite. This project is quite tough and will require some time to accomplish. First, users will have to draw roads on the official Satellite imagery of the maps. And then they will convert it into the real map. To draw things on the imagery, users can use lines and curves.

Once this part of the drawing is done, the RapiD tool will come to rescue and will fill in the remaining parts of the map with roads. Humans can easily confirm the location or adjust the roads since it’s an open-source service.

If you want to join this venture of Facebook, you can register yourself through their official page and can collect useful information about it from there.
