Exciting RPG Titles Await RPG Fans Courtesy of Microsoft’s Impressive Upcoming Lineup

Microsoft showcased an impressive lineup of first-party games during the Xbox Games Showcase, generating excitement among gamers. Despite the delays caused by the COVID pandemic, Microsoft’s investments in acquiring or building studios are finally paying off. The upcoming RPG releases from Microsoft in the next four to five years are especially exciting for fans of the genre.

Starting with Bethesda’s highly anticipated sci-fi game, Starfield, set to release on September 6th, 2023, Microsoft delivered a 45-minute Direct that left a lasting impression. Starfield offers a vast open-world experience with RPG systems, starship building, combat, crafting, and more. The improved gunplay and combat animations, resulting from the additional development time provided by Microsoft, have been well-received by critics and fans alike. Starfield’s subreddit has seen an explosion of positivity, and even PlayStation gamers are considering ways to play the game on PC or Xbox. With its large Steam following and the potential for a bug-free launch, Starfield could become the RPG hit that Microsoft has been looking for, ushering in a new Golden Age of RPGs on their platforms.

Obsidian’s Avowed, set to launch in 2024, is the second RPG on Microsoft’s first-party schedule. While the gameplay trailer fell slightly short of expectations due to lighting inconsistencies, the game’s focus on first-person combat improvements and branching dialogue systems shows promise. Known for their exceptional writing, Obsidian has the potential to deliver another great RPG for Microsoft.

In a surprising turn of events, inXile Entertainment revealed Clockwork Revolution, a first-person steampunk RPG, during the Xbox Games Showcase. The pre-Alpha footage showcased impressive visuals and fast-paced action combat. The game’s storyline revolves around a time-manipulating villain, and players’ choices in the past will have consequences in the present. With experienced developers from Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura leading the project, Clockwork Revolution, set for release in the first half of 2025, could be a major success for Microsoft.

Playground Games, known for their work on the Forza Horizon series, is bringing back the beloved RPG franchise, Fable. Although details are scarce, the in-game footage shown demonstrates the game’s stunning visuals, running on an Xbox Series X. With the hero’s reputation and choices shaping the world of Albion, Fable has the potential to deliver an engaging and immersive experience. Expectations are high for a late 2025 release.

Obsidian is also working on The Outer Worlds 2, a sequel to their hit sci-fi RPG. With a larger budget from Microsoft, the sequel aims to address the combat and progression issues of the original game. While not much is known about the game, the previous success of The Outer Worlds suggests that Microsoft may have another notable RPG franchise on their hands. A 2026 release seems likely.

Lastly, the highly anticipated sequel to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, The Elder Scrolls VI, is expected to release in late 2027. Though details are scarce, fans speculate that the game will take place in Hammerfell. After Starfield’s release, Bethesda will begin full production on The Elder Scrolls VI. If Bethesda sticks to their typical development schedule, fans can expect another massive RPG experience in the late 2020s.

In conclusion, Microsoft’s upcoming RPG lineup showcases a diverse range of games developed by acclaimed studios. From the highly anticipated Starfield to the revival of Fable and the new IPs from Obsidian and inXile, RPG fans have much to look forward to in the next few years. Microsoft’s investments in studios and their commitment to delivering high-quality RPG experiences may indeed usher in a Golden Age of RPGs on PC and Xbox platforms.
