EU Users Unable to Access Threads via VPN due to Meta’s Restrictions

Don’t attempt to sign up for Threads using a virtual private network (VPN) if you reside in Europe. It has been confirmed by Meta that European Union users are being blocked from accessing this new social network through a VPN. According to consultant Matt Navarra, this results in improper loading of content, notifications, and profiles. Although some users claim they can use Threads without a VPN if they had previously signed up with one, it’s not advisable to rely on this workaround.

In a recent statement, Meta has stated that it is implementing “further measures” to prevent access to Threads in European countries where the app is not available. Nevertheless, the company still recognizes Europe as a crucial market and hopes to expand availability in the future. However, Meta does not provide a specific timeline for these expansions. Currently, the app is in its early stages and lacks important features such as hashtags.

Threads is accessible to users in more than 100 countries, including the US and UK, but it remains unavailable in the EU. The European Union regards Meta as a key “gatekeeper” in the region’s technology landscape. The company wants to ensure that Threads’ approach to data sharing complies with the upcoming Digital Markets Act. Since Threads is built on Instagram’s infrastructure, there is also a possibility of data importation from that platform. Additionally, Meta is required to obtain permission for personalized ads, which may introduce further complexities.

There is mounting pressure for Meta to expand its reach. Threads has garnered an impressive 100 million users within a week and is already seen as a major competitor to Twitter. CEO Mark Zuckerberg acknowledges that the growth thus far has been largely “organic,” without the aid of advertising or other traditional promotional tactics. While it remains uncertain if this level of usage will be sustained in the long run, an expansion into the EU could maintain this momentum. External analysts speculate that Twitter’s traffic is already declining as users experiment with or switch to Threads.
