Elon Musk’s X Challenges Karnataka HC Ruling on Content Removal Orders

Social media platform X is seeking to overturn the Karnataka High Court’s decision, which found it to be non-compliant with content removal orders. X argues that if the ruling stands, it could set a precedent for the government to block more content.

In July 2022, X, formerly known as Twitter, filed a request to overturn government orders to remove content from its platform. However, in June 2023, the court dismissed the request and imposed a fine of Rs. 50 lakh.

X’s appeal emphasizes that if rejected, it would give the government the confidence to issue more blocking orders, which would violate the law. In their 96-page filing, submitted by the local law firm Poovayya & Co., X states that there should be clear guidelines on when an entire account is blocked instead of a specific post. Without these guidelines, the government’s power to censor future content would be unrestricted.

In the past, Indian authorities have requested X to take action on various types of content, including accounts supporting an independent Sikh state, posts spreading misinformation about farmer protests, and tweets criticizing the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last week, Elon Musk rebranded Twitter as X and introduced a new logo for the platform. However, many users criticized the change, and the hashtag “#GoodbyeTwitter” trended on X.

The original Twitter logo, designed in 2012 by a team of three, was praised for its simplicity and legibility at small sizes. Martin Grasser, one of the designers, tweeted about the design process.

Musk stated that X has reached a “new high” in terms of monthly users and shared a graph showing over 540 million users.
