‘Elden Ring’ composer Yuka Kitamura leaves FromSoftware

Yuka Kitamura, renowned composer of blockbuster games such as Elden Ring, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Bloodborne, has officially announced her departure from FromSoftware, the developer she had been working with. In an emotional post shared on Tuesday (August 1), Kitamura expressed her decision to venture into new opportunities as a freelance composer starting in August. Despite parting ways with FromSoftware, she emphasized her continued dedication to the gaming industry and directed fans to her new website, which showcases her impressive portfolio of previous compositions.

While fans expressed their support for Kitamura’s new journey, there was an undeniable sense of heartbreak in the air, as they appreciated the immense contributions she made to the games she worked on.

One response to the announcement perfectly encapsulated the sentiment shared by many fans: “Truly sad news. She is responsible for some of the most awe-inspiring musical masterpieces in gaming history. We eagerly await to hear more of her exceptional work in whatever she pursues next,” a fan expressed.

Kitamura’s fruitful partnership with FromSoftware began with the game Armored Core: Verdict Day, released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013. She later joined forces with Motoi Sakuraba to compose the soundtrack for Dark Souls 2, which included the three expansions: The Lost Crowns.

Her involvement extended to Dark Souls 3, where she served as the composer for the base game and its two critically acclaimed downloadable content (DLC) packs, The Ringed City and Ashes of Ariandel. Kitamura also played a significant role in the composition of the soundtrack for Bloodborne, collaborating with Nobuyoshi Suzuki and Tsukasa Saitoh on the esteemed expansion, The Old Hunters.

Recently, Kitamura’s compositions for the highly anticipated game Elden Ring secured FromSoftware multiple nominations for Best Score, Best Music, and Best Main Theme at various awards in 2022.

Beyond gaming, Kitamura showcased her versatile talents by composing the soundtrack for the 2019 film Shibuya Shadow, which revolves around a young man’s quest to find his brother in the bustling city of Tokyo.

In other gaming news, Dimitri Vegas will be taking on the role of “The Drop” in the latest Elusive Target event of Hitman. His character is described as a “DJ-turned-drug impresario bent on controlling the scene one way or another.”
