Early Reviews for ‘Gran Turismo’ May Not Qualify on Pole Position

Gran Turismo is not just a film adaptation of a popular racing game; it is a captivating narrative about the remarkable transformation of a gamer into a real-world racing driver. However, despite the anticipation surrounding Hollywood’s latest video game adaptation, early reactions suggest that immediate success may not be in the cards.

As of now, Gran Turismo has debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a critics’ average score of 60 percent. While this score is not exceptionally high, it surpasses that of Nintendo’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, though it falls short of the reception received by Sonic The Hedgehog 2.

Opinions among critics regarding this biopic are varied. The Independent suggests that one might derive greater satisfaction from holding a video game controller rather than watching this film in theaters. Similarly, Polygon expresses disappointment in how the story is portrayed, arguing that the film failed to fully explore the potential of video games in opening up new possibilities.

Despite the film’s shortcomings in terms of plot, critics appreciate the creative decisions made to bring this story to life. Variety commends Gran Turismo for its visually stunning racing sequences, impressive direction, and skillful editing. IndieWire adds to this praise by acknowledging the talented filmmakers involved in the project.

Box Office Pro predicts that Gran Turismo could potentially earn between $35 to $55 million during its domestic opening due to director Neill Blomkamp’s strong reputation and the fact that it is based on a true story. The film received acclaim for its cast and racing sequences during its premiere in Belgium. Perhaps audience reception will differ once the movie is released this week, similar to the positive response received by a certain mustachioed plumber.

Gran Turismo will race its way into theaters in the United States on August 25.
