EA Sports and EA Entertainment Split: Electronic Arts Undergoes Major Reorganization

Electronic Arts (EA) is undergoing a significant internal reorganization, dividing its studios into two separate entities. This shakeup has resulted in the formation of EA Sports and EA Games as separate divisions. Additionally, EA Games has been rebranded as EA Entertainment, indicating the company’s intention to expand its reach beyond video games and into the realm of media. EA Entertainment will focus on developing both owned blockbuster intellectual properties (IPs) and licensed IPs through strong collaborations.

On the other hand, EA Sports will continue to prioritize its sports simulation franchises, including popular titles like Madden NFL and EA Sports FC (previously FIFA).

In a blog post, Andrew Wilson, CEO of EA, expressed excitement about the future of interactive entertainment, stating that the company is building this future on a foundation of legendary franchises and innovative new experiences. He further announced that Laura Miele, former COO of EA, will now oversee EA Entertainment as its President, providing more creative ownership to key studios. Miele will work closely with other executives, such as Vince Zampella, who will continue leading studios responsible for games like Apex Legends, Star Wars (Respawn Entertainment), and Battlefield (DICE). Meanwhile, Cam Weber has been appointed as the President of EA Sports, taking charge of the sports simulation portfolio and racing games.

Wilson will maintain his role as CEO, overseeing both divisions. He mentioned that the new leaders will collaborate with their teams to fully execute these changes in the coming months.

Under the new structure, EA Entertainment will be responsible for all IPs that are not sports-related, including those from Motive, BioWare, EA Originals, and Ridgeline Games. This internal restructuring follows other recent changes within the company. For instance, the MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, previously developed by BioWare, has transitioned to a third-party studio called Broadsword Online Games. BioWare employees are expected to either move to Broadsword or be reassigned to different positions within EA.

Despite these changes, Wilson expressed confidence in the company’s solid performance and its commitment to delivering amazing games and experiences worldwide. EA has already had a successful year, starting with the release of a thrilling and gory remaster of Dead Space, followed by the widely praised sequel Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, although it faced some performance issues. The company also has plans to release a magic-based first-person shooter game called Immortals of Aveum, which has been delayed until August 22 for additional optimization. Another significant event took place in April when EA unveiled the logo for its rebranded FIFA game, EA Sports FC, following its split from the footballing federation.

Overall, EA aims to continue its growth and innovation in the interactive entertainment industry, seizing the massive opportunities it sees ahead.
