A recent poll of 2,000 employed adults has revealed that 56 percent of workers in the IT, finance, and business service sectors are concerned about the potential risks to their jobs due to the emergence of ChatGPT – the AI platform. This apprehension also extends to those in education (58 percent) and HR (63 percent). Writing tasks (49 percent), customer services (47 percent), and coding (33 percent) are seen as the most at risk of being replaced by the natural language processing tool.
As ChatGPT continues to advance, a third of those polled admitted to being unsure about how to ensure they have the skills employers will require in the future. Moreover, 29 percent of respondents also felt that they had not done enough to develop their skills to keep up with the changes being made in the workplace.
However, while the majority of those surveyed believe that AI technology can never replace the “human touch” of workers, 83 percent of them are confident that no matter how advanced ChatGPT becomes, there will always be a need for human intervention. The survey, conducted by professional training firm STL, also found that translation (37 percent), web development (34 percent), as well as marketing, advertising, and PR (26 percent) were among the industries most at risk from AI technology.
Interestingly, 58 percent of workers said that they would consider retraining for a job that is AI-proof. At the same time, 39 percent of workers expressed that they are open to using ChatGPT to help streamline their work processes. The survey also revealed that nearly three in ten workers had been introduced to AI in some capacity at their workplaces, with 82 percent of them experiencing improved productivity.
While the advance of ChatGPT and other AI technologies may bring new opportunities, employees must be mindful of the need to stay ahead of the curve. The research findings suggest that learning new skills is a key component of such preparation. Furthermore, with 88 percent of workers believing it is important to continually learn new skills for their job, it is apparent that the workforce is eager to stay relevant in today’s changing job market.
