Disney+ to launch cheaper ad-supported tier in Canada in November

Last December, Disney introduced its ad-supported tier for Disney+ in a direct challenge to Netflix’s similar offering.

Initially available to users in the United States, this tier will finally be accessible to Canadian viewers starting in November, providing them with a more affordable way to enjoy Disney+ content.

Launching on November 1st, the ad-supported tier will cost $7.99 per month in Canada. It appears that there will not be an annual purchase option for this tier, and users will be required to pay on a monthly basis.

This tier will offer Full HD 1080p content, which is on par with the ‘Standard’ tier, and allows for two simultaneous streams. However, downloading content will not be possible.

The Standard plan, priced at $11.99 per month, will offer the same features as the Standard with Ads plan, but without any advertisements. The Premium plan, costing $14.99 per month or $149.99 per year, provides up to 4K UHD & HDR video quality, four concurrent streams, downloads, and Dolby Atmos audio.

Upon initial examination, Disney’s ad-supported offering appears to surpass Netflix’s. To provide some context, Netflix’s ad-supported tier only supports 720p video quality and allows for a single user to stream at a time.

This announcement coincides with Disney’s decision to take action against password sharing.
