Disney+ that went live last November 2019 with its expansion in seven new markets in Europe last week, has finally turned to India through Hotstar streaming service.
In India, it was supposed to get launched along with the starting of the IPL (Indian Premier League) cricket tournament i.e. March 29th. IPL was the best time for its debut officially as this is the time when millions of viewers are attracted to watch the matches on Hotstar India. Due to the suspension of IPL on account of the COVID-19 lockdown in India, the launch of Disney+ has to be pushed back as well.
However, due to the lockdown to curb Coronavirus spread, people at home have switched to online services for entertainment and this is the best time for the launch of Disney+. It will compete with the already available popular streaming service players in India such as Amazon Prime Video and Netflix.
Disney+Hotstar, the name by which Disney+ is called in India, has two subscription plans namely Disney+Hotstar VIP at INR399 ($5/€4.8) per year and Disney+Hotstar Premium at INR1499 ($20/€18) per year with INR299($4/€3.6) per month.
Although, the Hotstar VIP plan was available at INR365 ($4.8/€4.4) per year and its Premium plan for INR999 ($13/€12) yearly before Disney + debut.
The existing Hotstar subscribers can stream the Disney+ content for free for their remaining subscription value without having to pay the difference.
The Disney+ teaser was made through Hotstar app update and its streaming service has gone live. Hotstar now has a dedicated Disney+ section with all the Disney originals like The Mandalorian. There are TV shows and movies from Disney, Marvel, and National Geographic. There are movies for the kids as well such as The Lion King, Toy Story and more.
