Diablo 4 Patching Process Undergoes Complete Overhaul by Blizzard Following 1.1 Controversy

The Diablo 4 livestream on Friday was a momentous occasion for both the game and its community. It was an emergency response by Blizzard to address the overwhelmingly negative feedback on the game’s latest patch.

Patch 1.1 implemented significant changes to the game’s balance, including class nerfs, an XP curve adjustment, the removal of power-leveling methods, and the reduction of certain key stats. These changes were met with strong disapproval from players, especially as they were preparing to participate in Diablo 4’s Season of the Malignant.

However, Blizzard is aware of the players’ concerns and intends to address some of them in the near future, although most of the changes will remain in place.

One key takeaway from the livestream is that Blizzard acknowledges the shortcomings in how patch 1.1 was rolled out, given the magnitude of the changes it introduced. Moving forward, Blizzard plans to share patch notes prior to their implementation, allowing players to provide feedback and engage in discussions.

The extensive changes in patch 1.1 were largely due to it coinciding with the start of a new season. Blizzard states that players can expect major balance patches to coincide with predictable events such as the start of seasons. However, players were particularly disappointed this time due to the nerfing of powerful builds without viable alternatives.

In the future, Blizzard will allow these powerful builds to exist, as long as they are not exploiting any bugs, until the developer introduces new ways to build characters.

During the livestream, the developers explained that the purpose of the changes was to address overly dominant builds that trivialized content. These builds heavily relied on specific stats like vulnerability and cooldown reduction, which were also nerfed in the patch. However, the reliance on these stats in the first place highlights the need for more diverse and powerful character-building options, and Blizzard aims to address this issue.

In the short term, Diablo 4 has received a new hotfix targeting the Nightmare Dungeon difficulty. This hotfix reduces monster HP and damage across all tiers, making tier 100 feel more like tier 70.
