In an era where franchises and IP-based content strive for longevity, renowned actor Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua have made the decision to bring the The Equalizer film series to a close with its highly anticipated third and final installment. The longstanding series showcases Washington as Robert McCall, a retired U.S. Marine and former DIA officer who fearlessly takes matters into his own hands to bring justice when his loved ones are in danger.
“I don’t see another one in it for me,” stated Fuqua in a recent interview with Total Film magazine, discussing The Equalizer 3. He further added, “From my conversations with Denzel, this is the final one [for him] as well.” The trilogy, which began in 2014, draws loose inspiration from the 1980s TV series of the same name and is helmed by Fuqua with scripts by writer Richard Wenk, who returns for the concluding chapter of the series.
A new promotional still image depicts McCall holding a rifle, possibly targeting a fallen enemy, while the presence of bodies in the background alludes to his growing body count. Fuqua elaborated on McCall’s evolving character in the upcoming film, stating, “He’s a little darker…He has to find his way back to the light.” In The Equalizer 3, McCall finds himself in Italy, seeking inner peace and redemption from his violent past, only to become entangled in a dangerous situation involving the local mafia, necessitating his return to his lethal ways.
