Denzel Washington has portrayed the character of Robert McCall for almost a decade. Collaborating with Antoine Fuqua on The Equalizer in 2014, which earned Washington an Academy Award, the duo reunited to adapt the cult thriller TV series from the 1980s.

The series revolves around McCall, a retired intelligence agent with a mysterious past. After leaving his dangerous life behind, he dedicates himself to helping those who have nowhere else to turn, using his unique skills. Adopting the codename “The Equalizer,” he becomes a vigilante for hire. In the films, including the sequel The Equalizer 2, Washington’s McCall operates as a lone vigilante, striving to correct the injustices he encounters while grappling with the emotional toll of his actions.

Washington and Fuqua have returned to conclude the story they embarked on in 2014 with The Equalizer 3. McCall heads to Southern Italy to find peace and contentment, seeking a quiet place to spend his final years. However, his plans are disrupted when the Mafia becomes entangled in his life.

Washington believes it’s time for McCall’s journey on the big screen to come to an end, as the character has finally found a semblance of happiness. He expressed his surprise at how his portrayal of McCall has extended beyond expectations, stating in an interview with Empire.
