Delay of Samsung’s own XR headset caused by Apple’s Vision Pro

The launch of Samsung’s XR (Extended Reality) headset has been delayed due to the arrival of Apple Vision Pro. Initially scheduled for February 2024, the Samsung device is now expected to be released in mid-2024 or later. This information is reported by SBS Biz (via SamMobile) and suggests that Samsung executives had to reevaluate their device after seeing the Vision Pro. One possible reason for the delay is an upgrade to the display sharpness.

Samsung aims to avoid launching a headset that is significantly inferior to Apple’s product, even if it’s more affordable. The Vision Pro is priced at $3,499 and will initially have limited availability. On the other hand, specific details about Samsung’s XR headset are scarce, although it is believed to run on Google’s Android software and be powered by a Qualcomm chipset.

Choose your reality

Understanding the various forms of reality can be overwhelming. Samsung’s preferred Extended Reality (XR) encompasses different related technologies we have encountered so far. Augmented Reality (AR) overlays digital objects onto the real world, while Virtual Reality (VR) refers to fully immersive digital environments. Mixed Reality (MR) typically denotes enhanced AR, where digital objects are aware of and interact with the physical world.

The Vision Pro is commonly referred to as a mixed reality device, whereas the Meta Quest 3 primarily focuses on virtual reality. Extended reality, or XR, generally combines AR, VR, and MR, but confusion persists as tech companies employ these terms in different ways.

We will have to wait and see what Samsung has developed and its capabilities. However, the extended development time should result in a superior device, making it a more formidable contender against the Vision Pro when it finally hits the market.
