Death Stranding Movie: Kojima Productions, Barbarian’s Hammerstone Studios to Work on Adaptation

Death Stranding, the groundbreaking video game created by Hideo Kojima, is set to be adapted into a film. Kojima Productions will partner with Hammerstone Studios, led by executive producer Alex Lebovici, known for their recent success with the Barbarian movie, to bring this ambitious project to life. This marks a significant milestone for Kojima Productions as it ventures into the realm of feature films. The movie will introduce fresh elements and characters within the expansive Death Stranding universe. While details regarding the writers, directors, and cast are currently unavailable, the report does mention that development is already in progress, indicating the movie’s fast-track production. Furthermore, it is worth noting that a Death Stranding 2 game is also in development for the PlayStation 5, hinting at the potential for a sequel to the upcoming film.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the partnership, Kojima stated, “I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios. This is a pivotal moment for the franchise, and I’m eagerly anticipating our collaboration to bring Death Stranding to the big screen.” As for the plot details of this newest addition, they remain tightly under wraps. In the original 2019 game, players follow the journey of Sam Porter Bridges (portrayed by Norman Reedus), a courier tasked with reuniting the last survivors in a post-apocalyptic America. This journey involves confronting supernatural entities known as tar-ridden BTs, navigating through a haunting Beach filled with deceased aquatic life, and relying on a unique device called a BB (bottled baby) to detect these otherworldly creatures. While the gameplay primarily revolves around walking and making deliveries, interspersed cinematic sequences offer deeper insight into the game’s universe.

Death Stranding features a stellar cast that contributed both voice acting and motion capture performances. Apart from Reedus, notable cast members include Léa Seydoux as Fragile, Mads Mikkelsen as Clifford Unger, Guillermo del Toro as Deadman, Nicolas Winding Refn as Heartman, Margaret Qualley as Mama/Lockne, Troy Baker as Higgs, and Tommie Earl Jenkins as Die Hardman. If the film incorporates characters from the game, it’s possible that some alterations may be made to their names and dialogues to ensure their broader appeal to mainstream audiences. The name “Die Hardman” and the memorable line “I’m Fragile, but not that Fragile” come to mind.

Expressing their excitement, Lebovici added, “We are thrilled and honored to partner with the brilliant and iconic Hideo Kojima in adapting his first film. Unlike other big-budget video game adaptations, our aim is to create something more intimate and grounded. With creative freedom and artistic expression, we hope to redefine what a video game adaptation can be. This film will be an authentic ‘Hideo Kojima’ production.” It’s ironic that Lebovici mentions this, given Kojima’s reputation for prominently asserting his name in his projects, as seen in the famous Metal Gear series.

Meanwhile, Kojima Productions is celebrating its seventh anniversary, and Kojima himself released a video message to commemorate the occasion. In addition to Death Stranding 2, he promises an entirely new game and various visual projects. The former could refer to his collaboration with Xbox, while the latter likely refers to the aforementioned film. Kojima stated, “I hope to share more information about these projects next year.”

At The Game Awards 2022, Kojima announced Death Stranding 2 through a trailer strategically filled with hints for fans to discover. From the brief footage, fans have deduced that Fragile has healed from the timefall torture, Sam Porter Bridges has aged, and a new guitar-toting villain, possibly portrayed by Troy Baker, is introduced. Baker also sang the theme for BB in the trailer. In a subsequent interview, Kojima revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic had prompted him to rewrite the entire script for the sequel. The cast of Death Stranding 2 will also include Elle Fanning from The Great and Shioli Kutsuna from Deadpool 2.

Currently, no release date has been announced for the Death Stranding movie.
