Every superhero requires a formidable suit to conquer any obstacle in their path, and fans are eagerly anticipating the introduction of Blue Beetle this summer. Empire Magazine has provided a fresh glimpse of this new DC character’s big screen debut. Xolo Maridueña takes on the role of Jaime Reyes, a young college graduate whose life takes a dramatic turn when he gains unimaginable powers. This origin story sets the stage for Jaime’s future within the DC Universe.
Following his college education, Jaime returns to his hometown expecting a peaceful existence. However, his life takes a dramatic turn when he encounters the Scarab, an ancient alien device that manifests as armor, transforming Jaime into the Blue Beetle. To protect his community from the Indestructible Man, portrayed by Raoul Max Trujillo, Jaime must utilize his newfound abilities to the fullest.
Perhaps the greatest threat to Jaime is the potential harm that may befall his family if he doesn’t swiftly become a competent hero. Damián Alcázar plays the role of Jaime’s father, and Adriana Barranza portrays his grandmother. Family plays a vital role in Reyes’ life, and safeguarding them at all costs becomes one of his top priorities as an amateur hero. While the future of the franchise is ever-evolving, it has been confirmed that Jaime may make future appearances, even if this movie is not officially considered canon within Warner Bros.’ current plans.

Aside from Blue Beetle, the DC Universe is heading in a new direction with the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran, who have been tasked with overseeing upcoming projects tied to the brand. The first film within this new universe will be Superman: Legacy, featuring David Corenswet as the new incarnation of the Man of Steel. However, this doesn’t signify the end for Maridueña’s Blue Beetle; it remains to be seen which future project will provide an avenue for this hero to further develop.
