The Copernicus Sentinel-3 mission captured an image of the powerful Cyclone Mocha on May 13, 2023, as it moved across the Bay of Bengal towards Bangladesh and Myanmar. This cyclone, originating in the Indian Ocean, intensified as it approached the Bay of Bengal, with winds reaching speeds of over 280 km per hour. With its landfall on May 14, Cyclone Mocha caused widespread destruction in Myanmar and Bangladesh, damaging infrastructure, inundating croplands, and displacing thousands of people.

During this natural disaster, both the International Charter Space and Major Disasters and the Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service were activated to provide satellite-based maps to aid in the emergency response efforts of civil protection authorities and the international humanitarian community. Satellites like Copernicus Sentinel-3 play a crucial role in monitoring and understanding global dynamics, providing up-to-date information for ocean and weather forecasting.

This particular image, acquired with the Ocean and Land Color Instrument, covers an area of over 2000 km from north to south. It showcases the vastness of the storm, estimated to be more than 1000 km across. Additionally, the image reveals parts of India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Bhutan, with the snow-capped mountains of the Himalayas, including Mount Everest, visible in the top portion. The absence of vegetation gives the Tibetan Plateau, located in China, a brownish color.
