Criterion’s October Lineup Features ‘The Others,’ ‘Videodrome,’ and More Releases

Criterion is back with another exciting lineup of spooky films for the month of October. This time, they’re treating horror fans to not five, but seven titles, including some classics and international gems. Leading the pack is David Cronenberg’s body horror masterpiece, Videodrome. Joining it are Nicolas Roeg’s BAFTA-winning supernatural mystery, Don’t Look Now, as well as Alejandro Amenábar’s gothic thriller, The Others, and Nikyatu Jusu’s critically acclaimed Nanny.

But that’s not all. Criterion is also featuring Tod Browning’s Sideshow Shockers, a collection of three macabre films by the legendary director. And for the first time ever, Todd Browning’s long-unavailable classic, The Mystic, will be available for viewing.

Don’t Look Now kicks off the releases on October 3 with its haunting story of a grieving couple who encounter mysterious sisters claiming to be in contact with their deceased daughter. This adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s original story is packed with special features that delve into its significance in film history.

On October 10, Videodrome returns in beautiful 4K quality. This cult classic follows the journey of Max Renn, the president of a controversial television network, as he stumbles upon a disturbing and mind-altering program. With its groundbreaking visual effects and thought-provoking themes, Videodrome continues to captivate audiences.

For those craving old-school scares, Sideshow Shockers is a must-watch. This collection features three pre-Code classics from Tod Browning, including Freaks and The Unknown. Browning’s unique background as a circus performer informs these films, which are both subversive and unsettling.

Rounding out the lineup are Alejandro Amenábar’s The Others and Nikyatu Jusu’s Nanny. The Others takes us to a remote manor where a mother and her light-sensitive children are plagued by supernatural events. Nanny, on the other hand, delves into the psychological thriller genre, centering around a Senegalese immigrant working for a wealthy New York family.

All four releases are available for pre-order on The Criterion Collection website. Prepare for a month of spine-tingling cinema as Criterion delivers some of the best in horror.
