Crackdown 2 Developer Ruffian Games Purchased by Rockstar Games, Renamed Rockstar Dundee

This latest acquisition by Rockstar Games could hint towards what the ever-mysterious developer giant is working on

Another big acquisition has hit the gaming world, although it’s certainly not as industry-shaking as the previous one. Rockstar Games has purchased Ruffian Games, the developers of Crackdown 2, and rebranded the studio as Rockstar Dundee.

Originally reported by The Gamer, Rockstar’s acquisition of Ruffian occurred earlier this month, according to a Companies House listing. The studio was officially rebranded on October 6.

Looking at their relationship in the past, it shouldn’t be too surprising that Rockstar would bring Ruffian under its wing. The two companies have been working together for some time now, as far back as last year. Ruffian has previously tweeted out that it was hiring engineers to work on “unspecified titles” for Rockstar.

The big question here is what Rockstar is planning to do with Ruffian. It’s entirely possible that the newly formed Rockstar Dundee could serve in more of a support role, taking on smaller slices of Rockstar’s enormous projects so that larger studios under the Rockstar banner can contend with more important content. Considering Ruffian’s history in open-world titles and remastering (it also played a role in the development of Halo: The Master Chief Collection), it’s possible that Rockstar could task its new studio with remastering some of its older titles. I’m not saying Red Dead Redemption is the most likely candidate, but it’s what everyone’s thinking.

Neither Rockstar Games nor Rockstar Dundee has released a statement regarding this recent acquisition.
