Could Indiana Jones Journey Through Time in ‘Dial of Destiny’?

The inclusion of extraterrestrials in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was a controversial plot point that stretched credibility for some fans. However, this criticism is misguided when you consider that Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) had previously uncovered the Ark of the Covenant, which melted the faces of Nazis, and the literal Holy Grail, items rooted in myth rather than fact.

As news of the time travel plot device in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny emerges, it should not be dismissed as absurd, but rather embraced as fitting for the adventurous character of Indy. Frank Marshall, producer and co-founder of Amblin Entertainment, who previously worked on Crystal Skull and is married to Kathleen Kennedy, head of the studio producing the new movie, believes this is the case.

In a recent interview with SFX Magazine, Marshall explained that time travel works well in the upcoming film, not only because it is a crucial factor, but also because it fits nicely into the story of the Nazis’ desire to right what they see as a wrong:

“The Dial of Destiny is perfect for us because it’s about time. It’s math and time. We always try and have some sort of archeological connection and there was certainly that – there’s a mythology to the Dial of Destiny that exists. It turned out to be the perfect thing for this movie. It works in the plot because it is scientific. Well, I guess it’s scientific! It really works for what we are doing and it sets up a whole lot of great plot points. The question is, if you can control time, like in Back to the Future, would you change things? And what would that mean? That’s a big question for everybody, and certainly is in the movie.”

In addition to Ford, the cast includes stars such as Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Toby Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Antonio Banderas, John Rhys-Davies, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore, and Olivier Richters.

Marshall also addressed the return of the Nazis in the film, explaining that it is a plot device that drives the story:

“Mads Mikkelsen’s Voller wants to go back and change time, change what happened, and obviously it turns out to be in Nazi Germany. The Nazis are kind of a thread we’ve had through all of the movies. I think it definitely works this time.”

The Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny teaser is now available, and the film will hit theaters on June 30. If you’re a fan of Indy’s past adventures, don’t miss this thrilling new sci-fi twist!
